Abstract: In many European countries, Finland included, comprehensive schools andteachers are currently faced with a diversity of new multidimensional school reforms. These reforms are often parallel and initiated by different stakeholders. They involvedivergent goals and aspects which may sometimes be contradictory. AB main executorsof the reforms comprehensive school teachers are expected to cope and combine thesedifferent demands and implement the new ideas in a form of best research basedpractices in their daily work. Despite the notable effort put on the development ofbasiceducation there stili seems to be a conflict between the sophisticated theories oflearning and everyday instructional practices. This suggests that there is a problematicgap between research on learning and instruction and the everyday practices ofteachers and schools (e.g. Brown, 1996; Resnick, 1999; ERT, 1995)
